Education System in Ireland

The Irish Education System was traditionally divided into three basis levels: Primary (8 years), Secondary (5 or 6 years) and Higher Education which offers a wide range of opportunities from post-secondary courses, to vocational and technical training, to full degree and the highest post-graduate levels. Most Masters courses are of 1 year and UG courses are of 3-4 years.

The higher education system in Ireland is broad in scope and encompasses the university sector, the technological sector, the colleges of education and private, independent colleges. The institutions which fall within the first three groupings are autonomous and self governing, but substantially state funded. Application Process and Admission Requirements

The major intake offered by all universities is September , whereas some universities also offer Feburary intake. Students need to score a 50% above marks in class 12th for UG courses and for PG courses usually a first division is recommended. Many Top universities would ask for a much higher cutoff, hence it is advisable to check with them.

English Proficiency

It is essential for all foreign students to demonstrate proficiency in English to be accepted for a third level program in Ireland. Student can either take the TOEFL or IELTS tests to show their English language capabilities. The qualifying score in TOEFL is 550 (paper-based test) and 90 (internet-based test). An IELTS score of 6.0 is needed for UG courses and 6.5 for PG courses. However, it is best to contact the concerned university for minimum cutoffs, as every university has its own respective admission eligibility criteria.

  • Attested copies of transcripts or mark sheets of class X, class XII, and qualifying examinations
  • Two academic reference letters from professors who have taught you most recently

Jobs and Post Study Visa

The Irish government has extended the period during which foreign graduates of masters and doctoral programmes may remain and work in the country after their studies. Under Ireland’s Third Level Graduate Scheme, international students completing advanced degrees may stay in Ireland to seek employment. All students completing Masters or Level 9 equivalent degrees get a 2 year post study visa, Students completing a Bachelors (Hons) or Level 8 equivalent get a 1 year of Post study work visa and student competing a Bachelors or Level 7 equivalent course get a 6 month of post study work visa.

Part time or casual work :

Many international students undertake part time work whilst studying to enhance CV and support their lifestyle. As a part of student visa in Ireland, you may work up to 20 hours a week, and iup to 40 hours a week during the Christmas and Summer Holidays.

They will assit you to plan your approach to securing a part time role whether it be through job webistes or any other source.

Scholarships

Students considering Ireland are recommended to begin the application procedure 8-12 months prior to the intake. Scholarship deadlines vary amongst institutions. The Government of Ireland and the Irish Universities Association have announced a scholarship scheme offering Indian students a chance to pursue their studies in Ireland with 10,000 awarded for living expenses and full tuition fee waiver.

Students can apply for this Ireland scholarship once they have an offer from an Irish University for a full time taught postgraduate Master’s programme.
